Using offset credits is being considered as one strategy for companies to achieve carbon neutrality. The purpose of this session is not only to report the detailed outcomes of negotiations on Article 6 of the Paris Agreement at COP26, but also to discuss the prospects of the global carbon market, including plans to scale-up the voluntary carbon market. In this session, an IGES researcher will present the results of negotiations on Article 6, followed by a discussion with an expert, on future perspectives for the carbon market.

Mr. Taguchi joined IGES in 2020 after working for private companies and governmental agency on projects to improve urban environments in developing countries for more than ten years. He has been engaged in research on international carbon market and methodology development and capacity building for the smooth implementation of Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM), and is in charge of webinars to communicate these contents to the public.

She is focused on supporting the design, funding and implementation of carbon finance projects to fight accelerating deforestation and ecological degradation as a Technical Director of Conservation International Japan. Since joining CI in 2010, she has been developing and managing the organization’s conservation work funded by Japanese companies. Before joining CI, she worked at a consulting company, Mitsubishi Research Institute, where she provided support to public and private sectors in the fields of climate change and biodiversity. A trained forest ecologist, she holds a Ph.D. from Hokkaido University and a bachelor’s degree from International Christian University in Japan.
