Sustainable Consumption and Production: Entry Point for Stakeholders' Engagement in SDGs Implementation in Asia
Among 17 SDGs agreed last year, Goal 12 on Sustainable Consumption and Production can link SDGs and existing initiatives on 3Rs, energy-saving and lifestyle change from private sector, municipalities, consumers and NGOs. SCP can be an entry point for mid-term and long-term agenda of transition to a resource-efficient and low-carbon socio-economic system. Considering the expanding resource and energy use and expanding infrastructure development in Asia, it is important from now on to establish a model for such transition in Japan to facilitate low-carbon and resource-efficient urban lifestyle. In this regard, this session will hold a dialogue between researchers and leading companies in the SCP area to examine how stakeholder collaboration can facilitate promotion of low-carbon and resource-efficient lifestyle, infrastructure development and policy design.

 | Masahiko HiraoMasahiko Hirao received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from The University of Tokyo. After working for a private company in researching computational physics, he joined Department of Chemical Systems Engineering, The University of Tokyo. His research interests cover environmentally conscious chemical process design and recycling systems design using life cycle assessment, and environmental education. He is also interested in connecting environmental information provided by manufacturers and eco-friendly actions by consumers as a MAC member of the Consumer Information Programme in the UNEP 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns, and the chair of Green Purchasing Network (GPN), Japan.  | Masahiro KawateiMr. Kawatei holds a position as Associate Manager, Corporate Social Responsibility Department, Group Public Relations & Investor Relations Division at Hakuhodo DY Holdings. He is also a Representative at CEPA JAPAN and a Member of the Japan Professional Photographers Society. Mr. Kawatei joined Hakuhodo in 1986. After launched the TV program ‘Jounetsu Tairiku’ (literally, ‘A continent of passion’), he integrated the media contents of the ‘Team Minus 6%’ project, a national movement of Global Warming Campaign. He became a member of IUCN-CEC after his proposal on CEPA was reflected to the resolution of education and communication at the CBD-COP10. He is also active outside of Hakuhodo, and serves as a PR advisor of Global Compact Network Japan, communication advisor of the FSC Japan, and a member of SDGs stakeholders meeting of Ministry of the Environment. (now Panasonic Home Elevator Co., Ltd.) and President of Panasonic Electric Works Denro Co., Ltd., since 2006. He has also worked in Panasonic Electric Works Co., Ltd as Executive Officer, Chairman of Anchor Electricals Pvt. Ltd., in India, and Executive Director for Strategic Planning and Director of New Business Development Center, R&D Division, Panasonic Corporation, before taking up his current position in 2015. His major publications include Ethical Consumption, Wither Human Ecology, Sharing the World, Eco-label and Green Marketing, etc. Formally served as President of the Academy of Sustainable Management and Chairman of the Green Purchasing Network (GPN) in Japan, he now chairs the International Green Purchasing Network (IGPN).
