The operationalisation of Sustainable Development Goal 11 (Sep 2015), the signing of the Paris Agreement (Dec 2015) and the formulation of a New Urban Agenda under Habitat III (Oct 2016) are helping to place urban sustainability centre stage in 2016.
High rates of urbanisation as well as financial stresses and human resource constraints are amongst the major challenges cities in the Asia-Pacific region face. On the other hand, the decentralisation of government functions is empowering a new generation of city leaders to access creative finance, emulate good practices and achieve leapfrog development by means of low-carbon technology. The Parallel Session seeks to:

Showcase and inspire cities to develop new / adopt existing solutions to key sustainability challenges through the introduction of good practices from leading cities.
Illustrate how intercity learning approaches can be leveled and scaled up, by showcasing a successful partnership.
Highlight how new training programmes to globally disseminate leading urban initiatives can connect cities to finance, business and other stakeholders.
Introduce how research organisations like IGES act as “change agents” by supporting local governments to identify, plan and implement sustainability solutions that are tailored to the priorities and needs of individual cities.

	Shuzo Murakami, Professor Emeritus, The University of Tokyo (Chair of Promotion Committee of "FutureCity" Initiative) Shuzo Murakami For more than 40 years, Dr. Shuzo Murakami has been involved in the research of Building and Environmental Control Engineering since he graduated from the University of Tokyo (Department of Engineering, Faculty of Architecture). He has been engaged in special research of experimental studies and numerical simulation of building and urban environmental issues. He has also conducted extensive interdisciplinary studies concerning global environmental engineering, urban/building environmental engineering, healthy cities, human comfort and health. Furthermore, it should be noted his collaboration in CASBEE (Comprehensive Assessment System for Built Environment Efficiency) in order to develop and generalize it as a City Sustainability Assessment Tool for cities in Japan and overseas. His research in environmental engineering aims to realize sustainable buildings and cities. He has been engaged in environmental model city and environmental future city. His achievements concerning energy, sustainability and environmental researches are remarkable. Currently, he serves as the president of the Institute for Building Environment and Energy Conservation. Close
	Norihiko Nomura, Executive Director, Climate Change Policy Headquarters, City of Yokohama Norihiko Nomura Mr. Nomura joined City of Yokohama in 1981 and he has been in the divisions of sewerage, rail and city planning. After he engaged in top management strategy planning, he served as Director of the Secretarial Department and Deputy Director General of Environmental Planning Bureau. He has lead Y-PORT project, which is an international technical cooperation project based on public-private partnership and drawing on the resources and technology of Yokohama as Director of Center of Co-Governance and Creation Office from 2012 to 2014. 	Vallop Suwandee, Chairman of Advisers to Governor of Bangkok Vallop Suwandee Dr. Vallop Suwandee has been appointed as an executive administrators by Governor of Bangkok for three terms of city administration. He is re-appointed as the Chairman of Advisers to the Governor of Bangkok in 2013 after serving the same position during 2009-2011. Prior to that, he was the former Deputy Governor of Bangkok during 2005-2008 and in 2012. His work dedicates to enhancing the quality of life of Bangkok citizen especially in the field of education, environment and public safety. Dr. Vallop received his doctorate in Higher Education from Illinois State University, USA. He is the founder of Kasem Bundit University. He has been recognized as an expert who involves in a number of education milestones in Thailand. He is also the president of Kasem Bundit University, and the director of Kasem Politechnic College and Kasem Pitaya School. He also serves as an Executive Member on the Committee of Student Loan, Ministry of Finance. While an academic, he was member of National Education Reform Commission, Associate Judge of the Central Labor Court, specialist on the Committee of Private Higher Education, Ministry of University Affairs, specialist on the Committee of Private Education, Ministry of Education, President of the Federation of Private Educational Associations of Thailand, President of the Association of Private Higher Education Institutions of Thailand, President of Phi Delta Kappa, Thailand Chapter, and Secretary-General of the Association of Private Vocational Schools of Thailand. 閉じる	PDF (7.1MB)
	Daniel A. Levine, Senior Officer, Tokyo Development Learning Center (TDLC) Program, Social, Urban, Rural and Resilience Global Practice, World Bank Daniel A. Levine Dan is the Senior Operations Officer / Team Lead of the TDLC. In his position he manages the Tokyo based operations and staff of the program. He has over 12 years of experience with the World Bank and International Finance Corporation covering finance and private sector development, knowledge and portfolio management, jobs and growth, and most recently infrastructure and urban development. Within the WBG, Dan has developed a reputation for the application of knowledge in direct support of lending and analytical operations. Dan has conducted knowledge exchanges in Beijing (China), Chennai and Delhi (India), Colombo (Sri Lanka), Mombasa (Kenya), Singapore (Singapore) and Vienna (Austria) with clients and staff. In the private sector, Dan worked in government affairs, private equity and management consulting. As a Wolcott Fellow, Dan obtained a MBA from the George Washington University.
