IGES-TERI Joint Symposium
India-Japan Technology Cooperation towards Sustainable Development
This year, 2012, marks the 60th Anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Japan, and on the occasion of the visit by Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda to India in December last year, a joint statement was signed with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, declaring a Vision for the Enhancement of Japan-India Strategic and Global Partnership.

Agreeing with the aims of the declaration, Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) decided to hold a symposium in the year of this anniversary to think about cooperation between India and Japan that contributes to sustainable development in Asia, based on the wide range of knowledge and personnel exchange that the two countries have shared up to now in the environment. With particular focus on technology cooperation, the seminar became an opportunity for collaboration between the industrial sectors of India, with its remarkable economic growth, and of Japan, which has an accumulation of environmental technology, and also a chance to think how the two countries can best exert a pull on Asia to realise a sustainable society.
