Achieving a decarbonised society is pivotal in keeping global warming well below 2℃ from that of pre-industrial levels. Countries across the world are accelerating climate change mitigation initiatives and aiming for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. Asia has more than half of the global population and is home to several developing economies, and this region is taking remarkable steps towards decarbonisation. The Japanese Ministry of the Environment (MOEJ), the Overseas Environmental Cooperation Center (OECC) and IGES have been supporting science-based policymaking and building capacity in the region. In addition, Japan has been contributing to strengthening various institutional arrangements and implementation of climate mitigation initiatives in partnership with multiple stakeholders within the region. In particular, promoting energy efficiency and shaping technology collaboration including co-innovation are at the core of Japan’s ties with other Asian economies in helping accelerate to net-zero goals. This session will showcase how MOEJ, OECC and IGES have worked with Asian counterparts and how these collaborative efforts are contributing to the region’s drive towards net-zero goals. The session will build upon the latest discussions towards global climate mitigation at COP27.
