Acceleration of SDG localisation is key for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda. Globally, more cities have taken actions on SDGs at the local level, such as the establishment of the framework of extended partnership with local stakeholders, integration of SDGs in their local master plans and others. Volunteer Local Review or VLR, which IGES has been advocating, is also one such action to accelerate the SDGs at the local level. This session aims to explore ways to accelerate the efforts of local and regional governments for SDG localisation and develop messages for the first UN SDG Summit.
The session consists of two parts – the first part highlights the trend of SDG localisation with reflections of the discussion of HLPF2019 and its preparation process and Japanese efforts to promote local government actions. The second part focuses on practical actions taken by different stakeholders for pursing local sustainability and tries to explore possible future actions to promote SDG localisation such as regional partnership and peer-learning among cities.
